For the first time in years, the war put money in people’s pockets to spend on Christmas gifts, and retailers who’d assumed holiday buying would be dampened for the duration were taken by surprise when 1942 rolled around. Many items were in short supply due to rationing and the fact that many manufacturers had devoted their production lines to war work. To the shoppers, this made not the slightest bit of difference. The stores became as crowded as the buses, trains, and subways, and customers lined up three- and four-deep to buy whatever was available.
